Chinese / Mandarin Lessons Taught at Pretoria Chinese School

Chinese/Mandarin is mandatory for all pupils and is taught for 5 – 6 half hour periods a week. Mandarin is not just a subject, but a vehicle through which Chinese culture and values find expression. This is further enhanced by the three core values of our school – respect, discipline and humility.

Chinese as a Matric Subject

The work in Grade 12 as a Second Additional Language is focused on the pupils’ listening and speaking skills, requiring the pupils to do a final prepared speech in the beginning of the third Term. The certificates of Chinese language proficiency are issued to Matric pupils on their Valediction, stating their performance on listening and speaking

Adult Mandarin Classes

Mandarin is offered to adults on Saturday mornings on our school premises by our Chinese staff. The course is based on the conversational programme. Chinese characters and cultural aspects, including Chinese festivals, are explained and practiced as part of the programme offered. Certificates of participation are issued annually.

Chinese Festival Celebrations and Other Events

As a tradition, every year the school celebrates Chinese festivals such as Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, Moon Festival and Chinese Characters and Culture Festival. The dedicated Chinese staff explains the customs and stories

Chinese Culture Clubs

Chinese Culture Clubs are offered for each different phase at school as part of the co-curriculum programme. The aim is to promote Chinese culture in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Chinese Bridge Competition

The “Chinese Bridge” – Chinese Proficiency Competition for foreign students is a large-scale international contest sponsored by Hanban in China. The competition for high school students was first launched in 2008.

The Chinese Cultural Camp programme is sponsored by a local company in China and organized by the Chinese Language and Culture Education Foundation in China and All-Africa Association for Peaceful Reunification of China in Johannesburg.
