Accounting is a means of communicating or passing on financial information to those who need it, and involves keeping a number of financial records, drawing up a number of financial statements and using these to make financial decisions. This subject is useful in almost any career, as any executive or entrepreneur will find a basic understanding of accounting and its concepts invaluable in running a business or climbing the corporate ladder.
Experience has shown that a sound ability in Mathematics (50% in Grade 9) and English 50% in Grade 9 is usually a prerequisite for success in this subject. However, what is probably more important than that, is an ability to think logically, possess a strong work ethic, enthusiasm and good levels of concentration. Accounting is definitely a life-skill subject, as everyone needs an understanding of finance, but is certainly a business language of definite aptitude for this ‘ type’ of work. Learners going on to study towards a business degree/diploma will find that they have a head start on those who have not taken Accounting before.
