The Pretoria Chinese School is a One Research Task Project school and this task is covered in Life Orientation—another core subject. The One Research Task forms 45% of the final Life Orientation mark in Grade 12 and comprises of a research task. A hypothesis/research question is formulated, a literature review is undertaken and then qualitative and quantitative research is done. The findings are then given and finally recommendations are made. Students also do Common Assessment Tasks—set by the IEB to ensure standardization. Rigorous class tasks as well as tests are also set. It is also expected that students extend their realm of knowledge and skills beyond school based content so four external certificates must also be included in the final portfolio. One certificate must be community service based and the other three can vary from acquiring a learners/drivers license to attending a leadership course, to passing a music exam.
