Pretoria Chinese School Language Centre

About Us- Background of the Chinese School Language Centre

The PCS Language Centre is located at the Pretoria Chinese School campus.

The PCS Language Centre is a non-profit organisation with a mission to promote cultural integration and improve relations among Mandarin and English speakers. Learning a language encompasses being able to speak the target language and is about understanding the background and culture of the people to fully and effectively communicate.

Students have a variety of reasons for wanting to learn Mandarin or English, and our mission is to ensure that this goal is achieved. The courses offered aim to allow students to effectively communicate in the target language daily and apply their knowledge in various situations such as business and travel.

The PCS Language Centre is a beautiful and ideal place for people in love with learning about different cultures and sharing their own to promote diversity and unity.

The Team

Our teachers are all qualified Mandarin and English instructors with many years of experience teaching language to second language speakers (Mandarin: HSK / TOCFL; English: TEFL / TESOL). They come from diverse backgrounds, and their experiences in language learning and training result in them being able to offer a valuable learning experience for students.

Teachers are well trained and employ various techniques to ensure the students can fully grasp the concepts taught in class. Some staff members are also well experienced in training students for language certification (HSK, TOCFL etc.). They have even taken these tests themselves.

Chinese Language Centre Programs:

Adult programs

Our course consists of 4 terms a year of 10 weeks each. Students can select from various courses which suit their learning pace and time constraints. The programs are open for applications all year round, with intakes during the first (January/February) and the third (July/ August) term. A minimum of five students is required to open a class. Should less than five students apply, applicants will be placed on the waiting list and deferred to the following semester.

Adult Mandarin Classes: Our school offers Mandarin classes/ courses to adults on Saturdays on our campus in Pretoria by our highly skilled Chinese staff. The Mandarin course is based on a continuous Mandarin Language Programme, which focuses more on conversational exercises. Chinese Characters and Chinese cultural information are explained, and activities are practised as part of the programme offered. No formal Mandarin exams will be written; only informal language assessments and worksheets are given.

As Mandarin is offered as an elective at the Pretoria Chinese School, some language instructors are familiar with the IEB requirements for Mandarin at Matric Level. Cultural program

At Pretoria Chinese School Language Centre, we believe cultural enrichment is integral to language learning. We have designed our cultural program to enhance our students' language learning experience. We also welcome those interested in learning about different aspects of other cultures to come and participate. We currently offer the following cultural programs:

-Children's Holiday Club

If you are looking for a culturally enriching program that is both interesting and fun for your children, then the Children's Holiday Club is for you. This club is offered twice annually – during the midyear school holidays and the final school holidays. The program is designed to teach students about different aspects of Chinese culture through various activities such as art, cooking and language classes.

The program runs for five days, from 08:00 to 15:00, with breaks between activities. Participants will need to bring their own lunches throughout the week. However, lunch will be provided at the showcase on the final day.

-Annual Tours

Various organisations run tours to China and Taiwan throughout the year, in which our students will be able to participate. We will provide information here as it becomes available.
