School Phases

Educational Phases

Our School is divided into four different Educational Phases:

Education at PCS is provided through a four-phase system starting with the Preschool phase, followed by the Junior Preparatory phase. Senior Preparatory is next with College the final educational journey and destination.

The Preschool and Junior Preparatory phases (also called the Foundation Phase) is a critical phase in the educational journey of children. Our Foundation Phase teachers are responsible for the educational foundation of children between the ages of five and nine (Grade 0 to Grade 3). These teachers profoundly influence the rest of these children’s lives.

Learning at school can only take place with an effective Preschool and Junior phase in place. It lays the critical foundation and building blocks upon which learning transformation can take place.

Our classrooms are well furnished according to the age level for each phase and comfort of the children.  The most modern facilities exist for achieving the maximum individual attention for each child in the classroom. Each classroom is provided with a Class Teacher & Subject Teachers where necessary.

Preschool Phase

Preschool Phase defines early childhood development

Preschool (Grades 00 to 0) is an early childhood development program in which children combine learning with play in a program run by our professionally trained teachers. Our vibrant preschool teachers (and assistants!) educate, care for, and inspire the young minds at our preschool.
Here the learners are nurtured and exposed to a variety of age-appropriate activities. They also commence with Mandarin lessons in a relaxed atmosphere.

Songs and the oral extension of vocabulary and repetition form the basis here.
Mathematics is all about having fun, so activities are practical, yet stimulating while focussing on problem solving. The learning of Mandarin is further extended through games, cultural events and songs.
Learners also actively participate in sport and cultural activities, where chaos is transformed into organised excitement.

Junior Preparatory Phase leading to personal discovery and growth

Junior Preparatory (Grades 1 to 3) - Building the foundation for excellence from a young age! An exciting journey for each learner of personal discovery and growth. The Junior Preparatory phase signals the start of the school journey where the focus shifts from informal playgroup learning to formal education.

The Junior Preparatory phase signals the start of the school journey where the focus shifts from informal playgroup learning to formal education.

The Junior Phase is vital for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Pretoria Chinese School created an environment in which our young learners feel empowered to ask questions, meet challenges head on, and starting the journey towards reaching their full potential.

Junior Preparatory

Senior Preparatory

Senior Preparatory Phase is all about creativity and critical thinking

Senior Preparatory - Our Senior Phase commences from Grade 4 to 7 and is the beginning of a more formalised education. At Pretoria Chinese School we promote creativity and critical thinking encouraging learners to make their own choices within well-established boundaries. The Grade Four children are introduced to cycle tests and assessment marks for the first time.

The PCS Senior Preparatory Phase follows the CAPS curriculum as outlined by the Department of Basic Education. The school further enriches and extends this curriculum. We further strive to be comparable with other IEB schools. Our teachers attend Independent School cluster meetings to ensure that our academic offering remains of a high standard.

Annually Grade 7 students write the standardised IEB MATCH assessment and Grade 6 students write the Core Skills Assessment.

College Phase meets the needs of students according to their talents and strengths

College Phase - Our College Phase commences from Grade 8 to 12 and is focused on preparing students for the final Grade 12 exams.
Pretoria Chinese School offers a broad and balanced curriculum that provides the best possible education to meet the needs of students according to their talents and strengths.

Our curriculum design will mentally stimulate and challenge students. It also provides students with vibrant and creative learning environments that are challenging, encourages curiosity and critical thinking.
