Subject: Mathematical Literacy

Subject Description:

Mathematical Literacy is the application of Mathematical skills in everyday situations. One aspect of the subject is looking at current affairs and applying Mathematical calculations to prove the impact that current affairs have on our everyday life. The subject does not involve abstract Mathematical formulas, proofs, or theorems. Scenarios given to students involve various problems to solve using basic to moderate complex Mathematical skills. We focus on topics such as Finances, Measurement, Data Handling, Probability, Tariff, Financial Documents, Rates and Taxes, and Maps and Scales.

Value of Mathematical Literacy as subject:

Do you want to be able to work out your income tax or know the effect a salary increase will have on your income tax? Do you know the size and scale of the ship that blocked the Suez Canal?
Do you know how to look at your electricity and water tariff? These are but some of the aspects we look at in Mathematical Literacy. Mathematical Literacy students gain a more profound sense of how the world works.

Students not only gain a general knowledge of Mathematical daily situations but can do the Math needed to prove it. The pace we work at is not as fast or as pressured as in Mathematics, meaning students feel more relaxed and positive about the subject. Students feel better about themselves when they no longer struggle to pass a test and enjoy asking questions and doing Mathematical calculations.

Skills/Content Carried over from Grade 10-12:

The ability to solve problems within a specific scenario as well as use Mathematical skills and reasoning to substantiate the solution to the given problem.
