Subject Description:

Mathematics consists of several topics including Algebra, Patterns, Functions and Graphs, Statistics, Euclidean Geometry, Analytical Geometry, Probabilities, and Trigonometry. In Grade 12 we tackle the exciting topic of Calculus as well.

Value of Mathematics as subject:

The value of Mathematics is that it stimulates the brain to think analytically. The subject is also a requirement for university courses such as Medicine, Science, Accounting, Actuarial Sciences, and Engineering.

Critical thinking is an important skill to have.
Schools are always looking for good Mathematics teachers and you would need to do well in the subject to study this course.

Mathematics is a subject that builds on the foundations laid in the grade before.
It is therefore very important for students to make sure they understand all the concepts taught and that they can apply previous knowledge to new problems.

Grade 9 Requirements:

Mathematics is a fast-paced, content-filled, and intensive subject. As the subject gets more difficult over the years, it is highly possible for students’ marks to drop by 10% each year if they do not work hard. It is recommended that students who want to take Mathematics achieve at least 65% for the subject at the end of Grade 9.
